Can I see your ID?
It’s a question that we’re often asked when traveling through the airport, visiting the gym or writing a check. Later this fall, CU Online will start asking to check your ID, too.
It won’t be looking for your passport or driver’s license though, it will be looking for a small ID file — a “Device ID” — on your computer that shows it belongs to you. If you have it, you’ll enter smoothly into CU Online as you always have with your account number and password.
You’ll be able to install this Device ID file into any computer that you regularly use (home, work, etc.). By checking for your ID, it’ll become increasingly more difficult for unauthorized users to access your account information.
If you’re not at a computer that has your Device ID installed on it, then you’ll be prompted to answer some “challenge questions” that you’ll have to answer correctly in order to access your account.
What should I do to prepare for See my ID?
If you decide to enroll in the See my ID feature, please prepare by taking the following actions:
- Change your password to something that is difficult to guess. Use at least six characters and include a number and/or a special character.
- When selecting and answering the challenge questions, please communicate with any joint owners that you share the account with, as they’ll likely need the answers to those questions at some point in the future.
Do I have to use See my ID?
See my ID will first be available as an optional security measure. We recommend that you enroll in order to continue reducing your potential risk for account fraud. Enrollment in See my ID will become mandatory later this year to comply with federal guidelines.
